How to deal with 255 characters filename limitations and delete files

A filename is a specific name used for unique identification of a computer files which are stored in file system. Various file systems establish different filename length restrictions and allowed characters used for the filenames. For example Unix and Linux have a limit of 255 characters in length, while Unix filename doesn’t need to have a file extension.

The Mac OS 9 has a restriction of 31 characters, while Mac OS X allows longer file names, up to 256 characters in length. Speaking about widely-used Windows operation system it only allows for 255 characters which include the entire path length, not only the filename. Path length is the total number of instructions executed from point A to point B in a program.

Filenames too long error

If the system encounters a path length exceeding the established limit, it will issue a warning message such as file name too long to delete, cannot delete file path too long, error 1320 the path is too long etc. So before you execute a further action – you’ll get the operation failure. Sometimes Explorer is able to deal with these limitations if you’re just browsing through these files and folders using short name format. But if you try to move or copy the file you’ll surely see an “error 1320 the path is too long” on your screen. Actually, Windows limits file names to 260 characters. But the file name must be shorter, since the complete path (such as C:\Program Files\filename.txt) is included into this character count.

Excellent. That worked. Took it over an hour but it successfully deleted a nested application data series which nothing else would touch and which had swallowed up 79GB of my HDD. Paid for itself in one go.

I needed the 'Pro Version' badly. It is a fantastic program for my needs, in the beginning I had couple of error messages, but I worked around (such as I was copying over files gave me chkdisk error msg, then second time it copied only 250 files instead of 300 files completely-for example!??! I deleted copied folder and re-tried then it worked! etc. etc...)

I used the product for the first time to delete a file that I no longer needed. Files was copied from a users “Shared Directory” to a preservation server. A few of the files I needed to delete, when I attempted to delete one (1) of the files would not delete because it was too long. I found your tool on the internet, down-loaded the application and successfully deleted the file.
I was very happy J.
